In 2006, Anna Kline began the process of creating her first short film, memphis, mississippi, named for a small now-annexed village outside Walls, Mississippi.  She wrote the screenplay, storyboarded general scenes, scouted locations, secured music clearances, produced and was also assistant director.
The story follows two childhood sweethearts, Astrid and Jack, during a fateful afternoon when they soon realize they cannot revisit life as they once knew it to be.
memphis, mississippi was shot from March to May 2007, which she co-directed with J. Lazarus Hawk (Morning Ritual, 2001) in Anna’s hometown, Hernando, Mississippi and also Memphis, Tennessee. The film was promoted with interviews and articles in the Memphis Commercial Appeal, DeSoto Appeal, DeSoto Times and DeSoto Magazine. The film’s production brought together all of Anna’s deep-rooted interests in music, film, event coordination, and the South.
In December 2009, DeSoto Arts Council awarded memphis, mississippi, in conjunction with the DeSoto Museum, a grant to help complete the film.
Also, while at Malaco, Anna served as production assistant on a documentary about the label’s history, working as a production assistant, participant coordination and scriptwriting.

In January 2008, Anna joined the Crossroads Film Society and the Crossroads Film Festival screening committee.  Then in February, she joined the ranks as Festival Coordinator.  During the festival, she sat on the panel on Legal Issues in Film and Music with entertainment lawyer Shawnassay Howell Britt, producer and filmmaker Orian Williams, and entertainment lawyer and producer Hal “Corky” Kessler. The roundtable concentrated on legal issues related to film production, distribution and music licensing, addressing potential difficulties encountered during the filmmaking process: use of recorded music, footage of public and private landmarks, shooting permits, interview clearances.

In April 2009, Anna received her first film credit for a major release, as a music researcher for the Sundance-selected and multi-award winning documentary Prom Night in Mississippi. She was invited back in May of 2009 to Prom Night’s post-production efforts as assistant to the Associate Producer, Thabi Moyo, as they gathered follow up interviews of the documentary’s subjects, before it aired on HBO in June 2009.
